A perfect example of “leftover poetics”, and how this series took shape. I was visiting a huge Riyadh compound, a massive skyline entirely under construction. The works were temporarily “frozen”, hence the absence of that hectic and noisy movement of workers and machines that is typical of large construction sites. I took this photograph for fun, without thinking much (although in Italian the expression “four cats” is used to say “few people”). In the suffocating heat of the desert I felt like the cats, looking for shade. Initially left out, this photo is now one of the most powerful of the series. Later, on top of a tower, I found another cat. I asked who accompanied me how the hell a cat could live on the 72nd floor of a construction site, they replied that he had taken the elevator.
Un esempio perfetto di “poetica dello scarto”, e di come ha preso forma la questa serie. Stavo visitando un enorme quartiere di Riyadh, un skyline di milioni di metri cubi interamente in costruzione. I lavori erano momentaneamente “congelati”, da cui l’assenza di quel frenetico e rumoroso via vai di operai e macchine che è tipico dei grandi canteri. Ho scattato questa fotografia per gioco, senza pensarci molto (ma l’espressione “quattro gatti” deve aver fatto la sua parte). Nel caldo soffocante del deserto mi sono sentito come loro nel cercare l’ombra. Inizialmente scartata, questa foto è ora una delle più forti della serie. Dopo, in cima a una torre, ho trovato un altro gatto. Ho chiesto a chi mi accompagnava come diavolo un gatto potesse vivere al 72° piano di un cantiere, mi hanno risposto che aveva preso l’ascensore.
