I had been here three years earlier, I knew the place and that hundreds of men, especially Pakistani, come here on Friday afternoon, playing cricket and football in dozens of semi-improvised fields. I wanted to see if everything had already changed, as I think it happened later. In short: the photo contrasts the city against who built it, but does not inhabit it. The game, the movement, the elegance of their long-sleeved clothes make everything lighter and more digestible. I was with Yeya – a former taxi driver, known during a night ride: we became friends and every new year we wish ourselves better luck, he is Egyptian – and his brother. We spent some time there and I took dozens of photographs, including a portrait of them. Then, while we waited for dusk to photograph the skyline, in a bar we drank a classic chai served in the styrofoam cup.
Ero già stato qui tre anni prima, conoscevo il posto e sapevo che il venerdì pomeriggio arrivano qui centinaia di uomini, soprattutto pakistani, che giocano a cricket e a calcio in decine di campi semi improvvisati. Volevo vedere se tutto fosse già cambiato, come credo sia accaduto in seguito. In breve: la foto contrappone la città a chi l’ha costruita, ma non la abita. Il gioco, il movimento, l’eleganza dei loro vestiti con le maniche lunghe, rendono tutto più leggero e digeribile. Ero qui con Yeya – ex tassista conosciuto durante una corsa notturna: siamo diventati amici e ogni capodanno ci auguriamo migliore fortuna, lui è egiziano – e suo fratello. Siamo rimasti un po’ di tempo e ho scattato decine di fotografie, tra cui un loro ritratto. Poi, mentre aspettavamo l’imbrunire per fotografare lo skyline, in un bar abbiamo bevuto il classico chai servito nel bicchiere di polistirolo.
