When I first thought about “Arabian Transfer”, I had in mind the beaches of Dubai and its metro lines, places where I noticed the diversity of people and their behaviors, and where I feel part of a new melting pot myself, different from that of other “world” cities that I already know, such as New York, Paris, London. In the Gulf cities I experience a sort of living-and-controversial social and geopolitical laboratory: in Dubai the immigration rate from all over the world exceeds 90%, while the European average does not reach 10%. It’s in this photo! Seeing how the identity aspirations of the Emirates (the skyline expresses development and prosperity) deal with western models (in the photo all look towards the West) and the very different cultures of origin of the inhabitants, surprises me and challenges me.
Quando ho iniziato a pensare ad “Arabian Transfer”, avevo in mente le spiagge di Dubai e le sue metropolitane, luoghi in cui mi sono accorto della diversità delle persone e dei loro comportamenti, e dove mi sento io stesso parte di una mescolanza nuova, diversa da quella di altre città “mondo” che conosco già, come New York, Parigi, Londra. Nelle città del Golfo faccio esperienza di una specie di laboratorio sociale e geopolitico vivente e controverso: a Dubai il tasso di immigrazione da tutto il mondo supera il 90%, mentre la media europea non raggiunge il 10%. Questa foto è cosi! Vedere come le aspirazioni identitarie degli Emirati (lo skyline esprime sviluppo e prosperità) sono messe a confronto con i modelli occidentali (nella foto guardano tutti verso Occidente) e le diversissime culture di origine degli abitanti, mi sorprende e mi mette in crisi.
